Woodanilling hosts indoor championships

14/08/2008 4:38:00 PM
SUNDAY, July 27 will go down in the record books for a country town to host the first out of city Regional Indoor Archery tournament.

The weather did not stop archers who gathered at the Woodanilling Recreation Hall on Sunday from shooting personal best scores.

Archers from Bunbury, Perth, Collie, Kojonup, Katanning, Wagin and Woodanilling gathered with their family members, at the Woodanilling Tavern the evening before the championships to enjoy a good old fashion country roast.

Due to the distance that South West Championships cover, most archers had not met previously and it was a wonderful ice-breaker and many archery friendships began that night.

The meal was enjoyed by 32 with several returning the following night for a farewell dinner.

As predicted by Woodanilling Club president, Keith Schurmann, there were several dual medal winners on the day.

Gloria Bliss from Wagin was awarded gold in both South West Championship and State Championship in the Masters Ladies Compound Division.

James Goodchild from Wagin won both gold medals in the Open Male Recurve Bare-bow division.

Sarah Goodchild won gold in the South West Championship and silver at State Level in the Cadet Girls Re-curve division.

Nick Wallis from Bunbury shared in the gold and silver medals in the Cub Boys Compound division.

Other locals from Wagin and Woodanilling who achieved gold, silver and bronze in the South West Championships are:

Gold: Jody Dunn - Woodanilling

Silver: Nigel Goodchild – Wagin, Gaye Goodchild - Wagin

Bronze: Greg Paini - Katanning, Shane Mauder - Kojonup

Many agreed that several of these a year would help unite the country archers and would like to thank the director of shooting-judge Keith Schurmann for arranging this weekend and Coral Dandridge of Bunbury for being a judge.
