Katanning out of competition

21/08/2008 4:49:00 PM
IT was an ideal day for football on Sunday, with a clear sky and little breeze, however that was little consolation to the Katanning Wanderers side as they went down by 28 points to Williams and had their hopes of finishing in the top four this season put out.

Both sides were pretty near full strength, and while Williams were first into attack, it was Katanning which was doing most of the work and they soon had a score on the board.

Poor kicking for goal cost them as within the first five minutes they had 1.3 while Cats were having difficulty getting past the Wanderers half backs.

Justins and Stade were doing a great job of cutting off Williams supply and Wanderers were really taking the game up to Williams.

However, Crosby, Rose, Anderson and Kain picked up their game, and the ball was moving from half to half back as both sides sought for a break through.

Medlen was beginning to show up, but his kicking for goal had not improved from the previous week, and many scoring opportunities went begging as Cats kicked 1.6 for the quarter.

The start of the second quarter saw Williams kick into top gear with Harley becoming prominent and his pace around the ground was creating a danger for Wanderers.

Harley kicked two goals and passed one to a teammate in the goal square for another, all within the first three and half minutes.

Todd Hetherington was battling hard to overcome the height advantage of Atwell but Williams looked to be taking charge of the game. But once again their kicking for goal was letting them down.

Kain was still holding sway at half back but Wanderers had some willing workers in Kowald and Eades. At half time, Williams were only two goals up although they had had 20 scoring shots to 12.

The third quarter was an even affair with the defences of both sides on top. Harley was Cats’ best player, picking up plenty of kicks all round the ground but the Wanderer defenders were still able to repel most attacks.

Their backs were playing in front of their opponent and were able to clear the ball away time and time again.

The same was happening down the other end where Kain and Luke Crosby were too good on the ground and in the air.

Both sides scored three goals each in this term, and Williams turned for home 1.9 to the good.

The chance was still there for Wanderers to win the game and move into fourth place, but the fitness of Cats was too much and although they battled it out to the final siren,

Williams had too much in reserve and outscored Wanderers by two goals to run out winners by 28 points.

The win kept Williams five games clear in top place and minor premiers for 2008, and the loss meant that Wanderers can pack their jumpers away until next year.

Daniel Harley, after missing a number of games mid season looks to be back to his old self kicking four goals and one of the best for his side.

Brad Kain was almost impassable at centre half back while Robert Rose played another captain’s game and covered a lot of ground over the four quarters.

For Wanderers, Gavin Farmer proved to be more than adequate in the forward line, kicking accurately for his four goals with Travis Justins holding the defence together,

Sheldon Kowald playing well and bringing all his teammates into the game, and Damien Roe another good game with his pace a big asset.

Wickepin worked hard to win with a good margin for a lift in their percentage in case Cougars failed against Hawks.

They were on top all day and finished up winning by 83 points.

Simon Duckworth top scored with seven for Warriors and was well supported by Astbury and Caen Taylor.

Wagin battled hard all day against the odds with Jaxon Ramsay their only multiple goalscorer and Sprigg, Cumming and Bothe their best.

Brookton-Pingelly finished the season in good style with a six-point win over Boddington.

Inaccurate kicking in the first half did not help Eagles’ cause and a good final quarter when they got to within six points of Panthers kept the spectators on their toes.

McCallum and Humphries scored three goals each for Panthers and together with Voack were their best players.

Jeremy King scored three goals for Eagles with Reynolds, Adam Pearce and Hardie their better players.

Out at Dumbleyung, Cougars cemented their place near the top of the ladder with a strong win over Hawks.

Next week sees the first semi finals to be played at Brookton. In the thirds Boddington and Kukerin-Dumbleyung, who both finished with nine wins each, will play in this sudden death game with the loser becoming a spectator.

In the reserves, Katanning Wanderers meet Wagin. Wanderers have played some poor games in recent weeks, and will need to lift their confidence if they are to overcome the Bulldogs.

Narrogin Hawks will play Wickepin in the league semi final.

After beating Williams at home two weeks ago, Hawks certainly lifted their profile and looked to be a real chance to go further than the first semi.

However, they got smashed in the game against Cougars and would have severely dented any confidence they picked up after the game against Williams.

Wickepin went through to win the grand final last year from the first semi final, and no doubt feel confident of doing the same again.
