Interest in memorial race

THE $35,000 2008 John Higgins Memorial Final at Glouchester Park tomorrow night will create plenty of interest for country harness racing fans.

Narrogin heat one winner Terris Falcon and Cast Your Magic, who finished fourth in that race, are the only country trained pacers to qualify with York trained Terris Falcon having a major chance.

Pinjarra heat two winner Sneakyn Down Under and runner-up Mister Odds On are considered two of the State’s best pacers.

Talented four-year-old mare Parsonemby ran third in the same heat and her trainer, driver Callan Suvalsko won heat three at Northam with an impressive Serial Pest and another stable member Albercross second at his first start since being purchased from Tasmania where he recorded 18 wins, 36 places from 131 race starts.

The three heats provided exciting racing and the 12 horses in the final have the ability to make it an even greater spectacle.

The race pays tribute to the late John Higgins, a former Narrogin lawyer, whose efforts as president of the Western Australian Trotting Association united harness racing in this State prior to his sudden death in 1994.

Most Great Southern trainers are having a break from the sport during the winter months however Bokal trainer Tracey Reed has a few horses racing and Lightning Jake, driven by Stephen Reed, no relation, was an impressive Glouchester Park winner for her and Bevan Taylor on July 21.

The rising 11-year-old who overcame a 30m handicap paid $15.80 for a win, $4.20 a place.

Stable mate The Perfect Print had no luck at Glouchester Park last Saturday night from a poor barrier draw and punters should give him another chance.

The Sed Elliott trained and driven Turbo Diesel ran fourth in the opening event and is racing well.

Local trainers have a Pinjarra meeting on Monday and Bunbury on Tuesday to consider next week.
