Vandals target Wagin shop front

7/08/2008 3:53:00 PM
DAMAGE totalling about $8,000 was faced by Wagin shop owners following a spate of vandalism last Sunday night.

Wagin Police Sergeant Tim Murray said the incidents occurred about 11pm on August 3.

Bricks were thrown through plateglass windows at the Wagin Newsagency and Dom’s Deli in Tudhoe Street, and Ewen Foley Agencies in Tavistock Street.

Sgt Murray said it was “wilful damage”, with nothing stolen.

“Both the newsagency and Dom’s have surveillance and we will be viewing the tapes,” he said.

“We will then have a better idea.”

Officers from the Wagin Police were on the scene by 11.05 pm.

“We were notified and were there in around five minutes,” Sgt Murray said.

Wagin Newsagency proprietor Jackie Andrews said she is fed up with vandals as this is the third time in six months the business has been targeted.

“The first time they smashed the front window and the alarm went off,” she said.

“The second time they pushed the whole front door in and the frame.

“At both attempted break-ins nothing was stolen.”

“(This week) they smashed the front window with a brick.

“We had close to $5,000 in stock in the window and there are glass fragments in everything including a white cabinet, a one-off from Dubai.”

Again the alarm went off and Mrs Andrews said whoever was responsible did not get into the shop.

“They just went along the street smashing. It’s also an inconvenience; we were there at midnight barring the window,” she said.

Sgt Murray said while those responsible could have reached through the newsagency window and taken something, nothing was stolen.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Wagin Police on 9861 1211.
