School hit by vandals

21/08/2008 4:36:00 PM
IN AN act of blatant vandalism, 12 large windows were smashed at Wagin District High School last week.

Principal David Harrison said some of the windows broken were in the canteen, while others were in the Pre-primary and Year 1 classrooms.

“It resulted in a significant inconvenience to canteen and classes,” Mr Harrison said.

“However, children were fed and those whose classrooms were involved were housed with other classes for the day.”

Canteen manager Naomi Ward said it took herself and two other volunteers a couple of hours to clean up the mess at the canteen, which had to be run on a limited menu for the day due to the inconvenience.

“We only served stuff that could be heated up, we didn’t have time to make sandwiches because the clean up took so long,” Mrs Ward said.

Mr Harrison was disappointed by the vandalism and said it was a senseless act of wilful damage.

The classrooms involved required a major clean up because glass splinters were spread everywhere.

“It’s very disappointing because we had to dispose of most of the Pre-primary toys, craft supplies and blankets, which the children will be without until we can replace them,” Mr Harrison said.

The carpets all had to be shampooed at least three times for safety reasons.

Mr Harrison said a positive to come out of the negative situation was the action taken by staff.

“I was very impressed by the efficient and swift action of the staff involved,” Mr Harrison said.

“They pitched in and got on with dealing with the problem together.

“Disruption was kept to a minimum because of their quick responses.”

Sergeant Tim Murray said upon receiving a complaint the Wagin Police attended the school.

“At this stage the investigation is ongoing and we have further enquiries to make.”
