THE Great Southern district display scooped the pool at the Perth Royal Show winning the Best Display overall, Best Display Southern Region, Best Arrangement, Best Public Appeal and Best Representation.
The awards dinner was a proud occasion for display co-ordinator Greg Brockway of Wagin and his group of volunteers who spent five days with up to eight people each day setting up the display.
With the theme, Soil to Sand, Great Southern Land, they endeavoured to depict the region from the soil of the hinterland to the sand of the south coast.
A highlight for the public was a river running through the middle of the display to a sandy seashell lined beach, with the sand sourced from Albany.
A mosaic of the different coloured soils of the Great Southern was another major attraction.
A montage on a turntable enabled show patrons to view the three seasons of harvest, hay cutting and seeding.
These included photographs and small-scale machinery models to include a header, square baler and a tractor with cultivator.
“We had our usual wool display but this time included a shearing shed complete with shearer and dog.”
Mr Brockway, who has been involved with the district display for 17 years and co-ordinator of the Great Southern display for five years, said this year was their pinnacle of achievement.
“We won in 2005 and again last year but last year it was taken away from us, this year was our best year by a long way,” he said.
Besides the five individual cups the Great Southern won the wool, craft, wheat, fodder and hay and wood sections.
The district displays at the Perth Royal Show are an annual highlight and judged by a team of five.
