LAKE Grace Golf Club Championships are done and dusted, the pressure is off and this year’s runners-up are already looking forward to clearing a spot on the mantel piece in 2009.
It was a 35 hole slog out for the Men’s A Grade contestants, Gary Frost and Craig Reeves, before Frost out golfed Reeves on the 35th hole.
It was a good comeback for Reeves who was seven down after the first 18 with Frost showing some blistering form on his morning round of the course.
Perhaps Frost ate too much lunch and that slowed him down or maybe Reeves’ caddy gave him the boot up the bum he needed, either way it definitely became less one sided the second time round the course.
While Frost had the experienced professionalism of caddy Graham Milton at his fingertips plus the soothing support of wife Nola, Reeves had to contend with an inexperienced (but enthusiastic) Suzanne who was there for the exercise.
Rabbits were startled as golfers went off fairway (apparently a clearing in the bush doesn’t equate to being in the clear), while shouting and calling the ball names had limited positive impact on the quality of play.
Once Reevs has his bush experience out of the way it was Frost’s turn to go wayward, with (brave) caddy Graham voicing what others would only think, telling Frost that he was only in the bush because he aimed there.
Helen Hunt added to her trophy collection with a win over Michelle Lay, the fifth time Hunt has been A Grade Ladies Champion.
The ladies were all golfed out with their three days of competition earlier in the week.
Hunt won on the 29th hole being 8 up with 7 to go.
Men’s B Grade was won by a jubilant Marcus Owen, his first B Grade championship win. Owen was three up after the first 18; however his opponent, Nick Maalouf staged a fight back getting to within one down.
However Owen upped the ante, being four up after 27 before defeating Maalouf on the 31st hole, 6 up with five to go.
Derek Stanton is back to back Men’s C Grade Champion.
Stanton defeated Peter Lay on the 26th hole (not quite the furthest point from the club house) being 11 up with 10 to go.
The men are now all limbered up in time for the Association’s Carnival which will be held at Newdegate this weekend.
