JOEYS, cubs and scouts in the Wagin Scout Association had a sleep-over camp last weekend in Wagin.
Debbie Aylmore, or “Akela” as she is known by her scout name, said the scouts have at least one special event per term.
“Last term we had a cook-out,” Ms Aylmore said.
“We have another camp coming up in a month which is under canvas but that’s for the scouts and the older cubs only.”
For this camp, the children involved had pizza for tea on Friday night, followed by a sing-along by the campfire for most of the night.
The sleep-over was held in the Scout hall but Ms Aylmore said she didn’t get much sleep.
“When you have more than 10 children in a room together they don’t usually want to go to sleep straight away,” she said.
The children enjoyed a bacon and eggs breakfast at the Eric Farrow Pavilion on Saturday morning, followed by tree planting at Chris Piesse’s farm.
“We planted 500 trees in an hour and a half, which we think is a good effort,” Ms Aylmore said.
“I think it was all the eggs and bacon they had for breakfast.”
After tree planting it was back to Ram Park for lunch and activities and then on to the Wagin Fire Station.
At the station the children were taught what to do in the case of a fire, although most already knew to call 000.
Volunteer fire officers Darren Smith and Natalie Spur gave them a demonstration of the jaws of life and the children were able to climb on board the fire truck to see what it would be like to ride in it.
The fire station visit ended with information and sticker books, emergency house plans and an ice cream.
Ms Aylmore said the camp was a huge success and thanked all those involved.
“When we have any event we have to have a 1:6 ratio with adults to children and we were very lucky to have the volunteer parents with us this weekend,” Ms Aylmore said.
“A big thanks goes to Kelly Edwards, Ron Montgomery, Cathy Dorn and Pam Fowler – they’ve all been marvellous.
“It’s a huge help and we wouldn’t be able to have these sorts of things otherwise.”
Ms Aylmore thanked Scoutmaster Kevin Evans for his many skills, including driving the bus.
“We’ve all had a good time but we’re all looking forward to going home to bed now,” she said.
