THE winner of the Glenys Gmeiner memorial award, print journalism, was Wagin Argus senior journalist Veana Scott.
President of the Wagin Agricultural Society, Chris Moffatt made the presentation at the annual general meeting of the society last week.
The award is presented in memory of Glenys Gmeiner who was actively involved in promoting Woolorama for 19 years
Outgoing Woolorama media officer Pat Harding said Mrs Scott received the award for her “splendid” article on the Moffatt family’s involvement with Woolorama.
President Chris Moffatt is a former head steward of the British and Australasian section, his wife Jenny has been a mainstay in the British Breeds office, their daughter Natala, a former Woolorama Rural Ambassador, runs the British Breeds section and their son Tristan co-ordinates the Beaut Ute competition.
In receiving the $250 cheque and certificate Mrs Scott said she was honoured.
“Glenys was a friend, neighbour and respected colleague,” she said.
“I followed in her footsteps, taking over as journalist at the Wagin Argus and later becoming public relations officer for Woolorama.”
For the first time the award was opened up to include photography and the electronic media.
Bob Garnant of the Countryman won the photography section and Candice Barnes from WIN TV, Albany, won the electronic media award.
The winning photo was of a rodeo bronc rider, Chris Young, which captured the spirit of Woolorama’s inaugural rodeo show.
Ms Barnes’ entry included a Woolorama wrap, featuring Rural Ambassador Londa Finlayson, fun rides, the rodeo and wool judging.
Plaques will be presented to the winners at the official opening of Wagin Woolorama 2009.
