DON Mercer, a former farmer in the district and now retired to Wagin, has recently returned from a whirl-wind tour of Britain and Europe.
At age 82 it was Mr Mercer’s first trip to Europe, where he undertook a Best of Britain, Ireland and Scotland tour and then travelled to Europe for a month.
“I’d never been to Europe before but I go for a trip every year and had run out of places to go,” he said.
“This trip came up and it suited me.”
Mr Mercer said it was “better than the pictures” and he only had to use his umbrella twice.
“The highlights were London, Edinburgh Castle, Rome, Paris, so many places,” he said.
“Innsbruck in Austria was very nice.”
It was termed a European Whirl and he said it was definitely a whirl-wind.
His only complaint was the cobblestone roads, a feature of many old cities.
“They were very uncomfortable to walk on, but I had a lot of fun,” he said.
Another first, Mr Mercer purchased his first digital camera dutyfree on departure from Australia.
“I’m very surprised how well the photos turned out,” he said.
“I was the oldest, I went by myself.
“I’ve done a lot of travel by myself and will probably do another trip next year, just see what comes up.”
He took a copy of the Wagin Argus with him and gave the paper these great photographs of himself in famous places in Europe.
